Virginia Holstein and Junior Holstein Association

2007 Annual Meeting

This year’s annual membership meeting was held November 16 and 17 at the Best Western Inn & Suites Conference Center in Waynesboro, Virginia. The banquet and luncheon were both catered by Patsy Wood.  On Friday afternoon, the State Board of Directors met to hear the financial and committee reports and discuss new business of the association.

During the evening banquet, an appreciation certificate was presented to Billy and Lucille Epps, hosts of the 2006 Field Day. Loren Rhodes, Ole Virginia Holsteins, announced his family would host the 2007 field day in Ferrum.  Walter McClure presented long time Virginia Holstein promoter, George Miller, a framed print of famous Virginia barns, including Round Oak, Walkup, and Rocby Holsteins.

This year’s Meritorious Service Award went to Lois Remsburg Skeen, recently retired editor of the Southeastern Holstein News.  This plaque has been sponsored by Riley and Barbara Wagner for the past eight years and the Holstein Association appreciates their generous support.  Mike Hendrix assisted in the presentation and shared some funny stories about Lois’ experiences.

Dr. Richard Wilkes, State Veterinarian, entertained the audience with his very humorous stories intermingled with important points about running a business, making decisions, learning from mistakes,
doing what you are best at, knowing your markets, satisfying your customers, and of course, supporting today’s youth!

Meanwhile, a craft/art silent auction was set up in the hallway to benefit the junior association
with many donated items from Holstein members. The juniors gathered for pizza and then
traveled to a Charlottesville ice skating rink for the evening.

On Saturday morning, the Shenandoah Valley Holstein Club provided donuts, coffee and milk to attendees before they headed into contests and meetings. The juniors held a public speaking contest, had
a membership meeting with election of officers, and then many participated in dairy jeopardy.

The State board seated new directors and elected officers including Jimmy Kerr as President, Matt Nuckols as Vice President and Margie Ann Dick as Secretary-Treasurer.  They also voted to support the Holstein Foundation in Bob McComb’s name with a donation of $500 and the Dairy Foundation scholarship fund in Nelson Gardner’s name with a donation of $500.

At the awards luncheon, Billie Jo Swope, State Dairy Princess presented a milk toast.  After a delicious meal, the Junior Holstein Association president, Rosemary Liskey, announced award recipients as follows:

Junior Jeopardy: 1. Logan Potts 2. Matthew Liskey 3. Matthew Long, Intermediate Jeopardy: 1. Paula Craun 2. Jamie Kerr 3. Lindsay Barker, Senior Jeopardy: 1. Derek Heizer 2. Rosemary Liskey, Speech Contest: Junior winner Matthew Liskey, Intermediate winner Liz Leonard, Senior winner Rosemary Liskey. These three winners each presented their dairy speeches to the audience

A framed Bonnie Mohr print was presented to Jeff and Phyllis Meador as recipients of the Junior Association Honorary Membership Award.
