DISTINGUISHED JUNIOR MEMBER

 

            Chris Potts, 16, of Purcellville has been named one of eight National Young Distinguished Junior Holstein Members for 2006.  Chris was selected based on a comprehensive application form detailing his involvement in Holstein youth activities, participation in the raising and management of his registered Holsteins and his knowledge of the registered Holstein and dairy industries.

            The National Young Distinguished Junior Member Contest is for national junior Holstein members ages 10 to 16 years of age.  The contest named it’s first winners in 2004.  Chris will be presented with this award at the 2006 National Holstein Convention in Sioux City, South Dakota.

            Chris owns over 20 registered animals, five of which are Excellent.  He has one three generation Excellent cow family.  He is a major part of the work force on his family with jobs that include milking, feeding calves, haymaking in the summer, herd health checks, classification, and clipping and halter breaking heifers for shows and sales.

            Chris is currently Vice-President of the Virginia Junior Holstein Association.  He has participated in two national Jeopardy Contests and was second in the national Jeopardy contest in 2003.  He was a member of the “B” Virginia 4-H dairy judging team that competed at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville, KY.  He has served as President of the Loudoun County 4-H Dairy Club and was a member of the club when they won the 2005 Hoard’s Dairyman Cow Judging Contest.

Chris is Captain of the 2006 Virginia Junior Level Holstein Dairy Quiz Bowl team that will compete in the 2006 National Contest.   Chris also plays Rec League basketball and is an honors student at Loudoun Valley High School. Chris is the son of Mike and Nancy Potts of Dogwood Farm, Purcellville, VA.
