This year’s annual membership meeting was held December 10 and 11 at the Holiday Inn Staunton Golf and Conference Center. On Friday, December 10, the Region 4 Holstein Meeting was held with about twenty members and presenters in attendance. Discussion included an overview of Holstein Association programs, updates and possible bylaw changes. That evening, there was an adult and junior ice cream social. The next morning, Lindsey Worden, from the Holstein Association gave a presentation. The annual membership meeting was called to order by President Matt Nuckols. The meeting included review of the financial reports, old and new business of the association, nominating committee report and election of directors. At the reorganization meeting, the following officers were elected: Past President, Jimmy Kerr, President, Matthew Nuckols, Vice President, Lois Skeen, Secretary/Treasurer, Margie Ann Dick, Public Director, Barbara Clary. Riley Wagner gave a short National Convention sale report stating that selections would begin in February. They are looking for either high genomic consignments (at least 2000 GTPI) or exceptional show animals. Sale consignments are not required to be genomically tested, but it is in the best interest of consigner to do so. Matt Nuckols discussed his experiences with genomic testing. The 50 K test is $135 and is 70% reliable. The 3 K test is $35 and is 60% reliable. Discussion was also brought up about the format of the annual meeting; if it should be one day or two and what time of year it should be? Another item to consider is whether to have a State sale or not or if it should be moved to fall? If a Virginia Holstein member has an opinion one way or the other, they should contact one of the board members Also, Virginia breeders will be given a discount advertising in the Holstein World and Southeastern Holstein News in the May issue for the souvenir booklet especially printed for the National Holstein Convention in Richmond. Frank Putnam, from Holstein World, was in attendance and welcomed Virginia breeders to advertise in the publication at a discount through April 1st. The adult and junior awards luncheon was held at noon. Master of Ceremonies was David Winston. Virginia Dairy Princess, Ashley Rubush, presented a milk toast. This year’s Meritorious Service Award was presented by Mike Hendrix to David Barns. David could not make it to the luncheon, but he will receive a clock plaque, sponsored by Riley and Barbara Wagner. David has served on several committees and was sale chairman for many years. He has served as both Vice President and President of the Virginia Holstein Association and was President of the Appalachian Holstein Club for 21 years. He has friends everywhere and recently moved to North Carolina. Lois Skeen presented the Kerr’s with a farm sign in appreciation for hosting the 2010 field day. Earlier, the juniors held a public speaking contest, had a membership meeting with election of officers, and then many participated in dairy jeopardy.
