The Brown Family, Witching Hour Farm - VHA Member Spotlight

Witching Hour Farm, Gretna Va.

JD Brown, Arin Brown, Jordin Brown, JD Brown II

The Brown Family has been involved in showing for many years. JD grew up in 4-H with beef cattle, Dairy and swine. JD grew up on a thoroughbred farm in Woodbine MD. JD became friends with the Patrick Family-(Maple Dell Farm) his first year in 4-H. He then spent the next 25 years working for them and is good friends with the family to this day. Maple Dell currently is housing some of their cattle.

Arin has been showing since she was 8 years old in 4-H in Frederick County, Maryland. She showed Beef cattle, horses and swine. Arin held many roles with the Beef, Sheep and Swine Club in Frederick County as well as Middletown, FFA. I attended 4-H camp every year and also attended as camp counselors. Arin was involved with livestock and horse judging through FFA during high school.

Showing livestock and dairy led to Arin and JD meeting each other. They have been married for 20 years this July. They continued to show Reg. Angus Cattle in Maryland at all levels for about 10 yrs. In 2006 we relocated to Gretna, Virginia.

Their children Jordin started with a 4-H lamb project in 2008 and JD Brown II started in 2011. As the kids became more interested in 4-H, 2012 we added pigs for the kids to show. Jordin has been riding horses her whole life and two years ago she started barrel racing. She loves to attend shows and be with other people to motivate them in racing. Jordin and Arin also have horses and mules. They enjoy riding on weekends together and occasionally attend local shows.

In 2013 Pittsylvania County wanted to start a Dairy Lease Program which JD serves as a board member. Jordin and JD wanted to show cattle and be involved with the lease program. The kids leased animals from a local farm and worked with them weekly during show season. Since JD has many years experience working on a dairy with the Patrick Family- Maple Dell Farm in Maryland. The family decided to purchase our own. We currently have 10 head and have been involved in Southside Dairy Association for four years. Since we have purchase our own Holsteins we have shown at the Pittsylvania County Southside Dairy Association show, The Virginia Spring and Summer Show, All American Show, and the Maryland State Fair. At the All American Jordin was able to experience being in the top 20 in fitting and showing. Jordin and JD have also helped other farms show their dairy cattle.

Jordin and JD are also members of the Pittsylvania County 4-H Club where they serve as Secretary and Treasurer. They both have attended the Block and Bridle at Virginia Tech in years past. They love to participate in club events such as Dairy Days at Southern States.

Jordin is a member of Gretna FFA Chapter. She has competed at the local county and State contest in livestock judging and has done very well.
